Affirmations for Abundance

Does the pandemic have you worried about money?

Maybe you’ve been deemed non-essential.  Maybe your work has slowed or been reduced to part-time.  Maybe you’ve been laid-off completely.  Or maybe none of these things have happened – yet – but you’re concerned they might.

As the economy slows due to quarantines and lockdowns and the stock market takes a hit, it’s natural for many of us to get sucked into feelings of fear and lack around money – especially if these feelings are old and familiar to us.

I’ve Been There

I grew up amid a good deal of financial instability.  My father, who was the sole breadwinner for our family, was self-employed in the construction industry.  And while he was extremely skilled at his craft, he wasn’t as skilled at managing his business or money.

His work was sporadic throughout the year and completely non-existent in the winter.  Even when money was coming in there was a feeling of “better spend it while you can because you know it won’t last” which created a palpable feast or famine dynamic.

One day he’d get paid and go on a shopping spree, the next we’d hear, “I hope you guys have someplace to live because we’re losing the house.”  Even when the money was flowing, it was impossible to feel secure.  The constantly shifting tides bred a deep underlying sense of uncertainty.

Naturally, this childhood programming carried over into my early adulthood.  When I move out on my own, I struggled to make ends meet despite working tirelessly and being scrupulous with every penny.

Even with a paycheck in hand, I couldn’t shake the feelings of financial uncertainty I had experienced growing up and this had a huge negative impact on my ability to attract and keep money in my life.

Overcoming Financial Fear

In time, I worked through my money issues to become the successful and prosperous person I am today. And now, I’m going to share one of the most important things I learned along the way…

Regardless of whether you take a psychological approach or a spiritual one, if you prefer law of attraction or quantum physics, ALL results-based personal development boils down to this one principle:

You create what you focus on.

But as simple as this sounds, for most of us it’s quite challenging to maintain consistent focus on what we want when there is so much of what we don’t want going on in the world.  And it’s even harder for those of us who were engrained with fear, worry, and uncertainty from an early age.

As a young adult, my pattern looked something like this…

If my finances were on an up-swing, I’d be feeling pretty good.  I’d start to relax a little, and dare I say, even begin to experience a small sense of the “abundance” law of attraction gurus talk about.

But then something would happen.  The car would break down, a child got sick, or my source of income (which was always inconsistent) would suddenly dry up.

My fledgling sense of abundance would swiftly evaporate and immediately be replaced with “Oh no, it’s happening again…” feelings of fear, worry, scarcity, and lack.

Well, if the basic principle of “you create what you focus on” is true (and it is), I’m sure you can imagine the impact this pattern had on my life.  As I rode the emotional roller-coaster of financial uncertainty, I was trapped in a self-reinforcing cycle that recreated my childhood experience over and over again.

“Look, we have some money.”

“Wait, no we don’t.”

“Oh no, it’s happening again!”

“Better spend this money while we have it because the good times won’t last.”

“Be afraid… be very afraid.”

Changing the Game

In those days, it felt like the Universe was playing a cruel game with me.  Like being invited to a kickball game by the schoolyard bully, then getting shoved into the mud in front of the entire class.

But everything shifted for me when I decided to play a new game with the Universe.

I got wise to how I was allowing life events to trip me into the financial mud.  So, the next time the car broke down, or a child got sick, or the flow of money slowed, rather than thinking “Oh no, it’s happening again!” instead I said…

“Haha, Universe!”

“I see what you’re trying to do here.”

“But I won’t let you trick me into feeling afraid!”

I realized those financial setbacks were really a test I needed to pass in order to attract and keep money in my life.  Each one an opportunity to choose: Will I fall into the mud again, or will I stay focused on what I want – which is living an abundant, financially secure life?

This isn’t a one-time fix, but a question that must be asked and answered repeatedly as we navigate life’s natural ups and downs.  And no time is that more true than right now!
